BREAST LIFT or BREAST REDUCTION

This surgery is used to correct the flaccidity or "drooping" of the breasts, which can occur resulting from very large breasts, or after pregnancy and breast feeding. It is associated with breast augmentation ( implants),  because in breast REDUCTION surgery,  part of the breast tissue is cut and removed to produce smaller breasts. Breast reduction is used when the patients breast is disproportionately larger in respect to their physical appearance. This can occur starting from adolescence, well until adulthood, including after pregnancy.  Such growth in the size of the breast can produce alterations in the self esteem of the patient as well as depression, but most of all it is also associated with physical repercussions such as chronic back pain and shoulder pain, poor posture, and lesions on the skin.

The incisions employed vary  from just around the areola (periareolar), to around the areola with a vertical extension extending to the submamary line, or from around the areola with the vertical extension plus a line extending to the submamary line (an inverted T or in the shape of an anchor). The decision as to which incision should be employed depends on the grade of flaccidity of the individuals breasts and the procedures of augmentation or reduction associated. In general  once the healing process is completed and the scar tissue has taken on their final color and consistency, the scars are barely noticeable. In this surgery corrections of the areola (size and shape) can also be implemented. The techniques used in breast surgery allow the conservation of the sensibility of the nipples, and the numbness felt post surgery is temporary in most cases.
The type of anesthesia used is similar to breast augmentation surgery, and the recuperation period is 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the extension of the surgical procedure. Physical activity can once again be resumed  5 or 6 weeks after surgery. It is necessary to use special brassieres during the first 6 to 8 weeks post op.
