NOSE SURGERY
(RINOPLASTY)
This surgery implies a large range of changes depending on the desires of the
patient, and the advice of the plastic surgeon. The goal here is to achieve
harmony between the nose and the rest of the facial characteristics, without
creating the same nose for every patient (like what occurred more than 3 decades
ago).
While planning this surgery, it is of great importance the functional study of
the individuals nose, so as to detect any abnormality that can be susceptible of
correction. That's why it is very common to include x-ray studies in the pre op
routine. This surgery can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation in
cases of minor corrections, and with general anesthesia in cases of major
anomalies. There are two principle ways to operate the nose. One is with
incisions that cut the columella ( the central post at the base of the nose that
divides the two nasal passages). The other is, incisions in the interior of the
nose without producing external scarring. This procedure is most commonly used
in Mexico, reserving the use of the "open" procedure only in cases with
extremely complex anomalies. It is common to use casts or other types of
bandaging methods in the first days after surgery and for up to two weeks
after. The patient can develop swelling of the face and moderate bruising around
the eyes, lasting approximately two weeks.
