TUMMY TUCK, ABDOMINOPLASTY,  OR LUMPECTOMY

This surgery is used to correct flaccid (loose or hanging) skin from the abdomen, resulting from dramatic weight loss (in men and women) or previous pregnancies. Said flaccidity is consequential to damage to the skin and muscles of the abdomen. With abdominoplasty it is possible to eliminate stretch marks (only when they are located below the naval line) and vertical scars in the same area. This surgery also corrects umbilical hernias, and a defect known as "diastases de rectos" in which there exists an abnormal separation between the recto abdominal muscles (these are the muscles that form the "washboard" stomach).

In abdominal surgery incisions are made in the lower part of the abdomen, which can remain hidden below under garments and bathing suits. A portion of the skin is removed and the abdominal muscles are reinforced by means of  sutures. It is also common to perform  liposuction on the sides of the abdomen to obtain a better final result. The final result is a reduced size in the abdominal region and a more curvaceous waistline, but does not significantly change the weight of the patient. It is very important to make clear that this surgery will not avoid future weight gain, and the patients are advised to follow a healthy, balanced diet and exercise routine.

Generally a regional anesthesia is used ( to block only the area of the abdomen) even though the patient is under sedation. A short  period of  hospitalization is required and the use of a special girdle is required for 6 to 8 weeks. No strenuous activity should be done the first week following surgery. Physical exercise can be resumed after a period of 4 to 6 weeks.
